Avian influenza monitoring continues in the Netherlands and Europe
Authorities in the Netherlands and across Europe are monitoring the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). While no recent infections have been detected in kept poultry in the Netherlands since July, an outbreak was reported at a laying poultry farm in Lutjegast, Groningen, resulting in the culling of 45,000 birds to prevent further spread.
Kees de Jong, chairman of the industry organization AVINED, noted that while the virus remains a global presence, current activity appears lower than in previous years. However, the risk is expected to increase during the autumn due to migratory bird patterns.
In several European countries, including Belgium, Germany, France, Bulgaria, and the United Kingdom, outbreaks in kept poultry have been reported. Officials emphasize the importance of biosecurity, hygiene protocols, and the immediate reporting of suspected cases by farmers and veterinarians to mitigate risks.
