Avianca flight diverted to Miami after severe turbulence leaves multiple injured
An Avianca flight (AV042) traveling from Medellín, Colombia, to New York City was forced to make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport early Friday morning following severe, unexpected turbulence.
The Airbus A320 encountered intense instability while flying over the Caribbean region, with reports indicating the aircraft may have lost approximately 25,000 feet of altitude during the incident. The flight diverted to Miami as a precautionary measure in accordance with safety protocols.
Emergency responders, including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, treated multiple individuals upon landing. While Avianca reported that nine people—six passengers and three cabin crew members—were affected by the turbulence, local authorities confirmed that eight people were transported to nearby hospitals. One patient was reportedly taken to a specialized trauma center.
Passengers described a terrifying experience, with some reporting the plane dropped sharply several times. Following the landing, Avianca arranged for the remaining passengers to continue their journey to John F. Kennedy International Airport on a subsequent flight. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.
