Avianca flight emergency landing in Miami
Overview
An Avianca Airbus A320 flight, identified as Flight 042, traveling from Medellín, Colombia, to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport was forced to make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport early Friday morning after encountering severe turbulence over the Caribbean region.
The aircraft reportedly experienced a rapid loss of altitude, dropping approximately 25,000 feet within minutes due to intense atmospheric instability. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue upgraded its response to a ‘Level One Mass Casualty Incident’ due to the number of patients requiring medical attention.
At least eight people were hospitalized, including six passengers and three cabin crew members. One individual was transported to a major trauma center with serious injuries, while seven others were taken to local hospitals via ambulance. Onboard footage and passenger accounts captured the terrifying experience, showing individuals using ice packs for head injuries and some wearing neck braces.
Avianca stated that the diversion was a precautionary measure following safety protocols. The airline confirmed that the remaining passengers were provided with assistance to continue their journey to New York later that morning. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.
