Aviation firms forge partnerships for electric propulsion and ultra‑short‑takeoff travel

Electra, UrbanV and Signature Aviation have signed a memorandum of understanding to create a Direct Aviation ecosystem that combines Electra’s nine‑passenger EL9 hybrid‑electric aircraft, capable of taking off and landing in as little as 150 feet, with UrbanV’s vertiport infrastructure and Signature Aviation’s global network of private‑aviation terminals. The alliance aims to launch point‑to‑point regional flights on routes of 50‑250 miles, targeting the estimated 35 million daily regional trips in the United States and more than 6 000 routes that currently lack efficient air service.

Airbus and MTU Aero Engines announced a joint‑venture plan to develop a fully electric aircraft propulsion system powered by hydrogen fuel‑cells. The partnership will pool Airbus’s expertise in commercial aircraft and hydrogen technologies with MTU’s engine design, integration, certification and maintenance capabilities, accelerating design, testing and industrialisation. The new entity is expected to be established by 2027, once regulatory approvals are secured, and is positioned as part of the broader effort to decarbonise aviation, with the fuel‑cell system producing only water vapor as exhaust.
