Aviation incidents reported in Miami and India
Two separate aviation incidents involving sudden altitude changes or weather strikes have been reported.
An Avianca Airbus A320 traveling from Medellín, Colombia, to New York JFK was forced to make an emergency landing in Miami after a sudden descent of 25,000 feet. The aircraft had reached an altitude of approximately 35,000 feet while flying over Jamaica and Cuba before the rapid drop occurred. At least eight passengers sustained injuries, with at least one reported to be in serious condition and requiring urgent medical transport.
In a separate incident, an IndiGo flight in India was struck by lightning at an altitude of 17,000 feet. The strike caused damage to the nose cone protecting the meteorological radar. The flight, carrying 104 passengers and six crew members, landed safely without any injuries reported. The aircraft has been grounded pending full inspections and repairs.
