AVM Fritz!Box lineup evolves from legacy 7390 to Wi-Fi 7 models
AVM is evolving its Fritz!Box product line, transitioning from legacy hardware like the FritzBox 7390 to newer models such as the FritzBox 5690 Pro and the upcoming FritzBox DSL/Fiber 7-90.
The FritzBox 7390, originally released in 2010, has become technically obsolete. It no longer receives official firmware updates, with its last major update, FritzOS 6.88, being released in 2017. While it remains functional for basic tasks, it struggles with modern requirements like 4K streaming and high-speed internet connections.
In contrast, the new FritzBox DSL/Fiber 7-90 introduces a new numbering logic and features Wi-Fi 7 across all bands. However, technical comparisons show that the existing FritzBox 5690 Pro may offer higher gross speeds in certain scenarios, reaching 18.4 GBit/s compared to the 7-90’s 12.2 GBit/s. The 5690 Pro also utilizes four data streams in the 6-GHz band, whereas the 7-90 uses two, potentially offering better load distribution for multiple simultaneous users.
