AVM FritzBox hardware evolution and FRITZ!OS 8.50 rollout

Overview

Following the hardware refresh unveiled at IFA 2026, AVM has expanded its Wi-Fi 7 offerings with the market launch of the FRITZ!Box 6690 Pro, a cable router supporting three frequency bands. The company also introduced a new generation of hardware, headlined by the FRITZ!Box DSL/Fiber 7-90. This model features a minimalist, angular design and a new naming convention that prioritizes connection types (e.g., DSL, Fiber, Cable). However, the 7-90 faces significant availability challenges because an undisclosed buyer secured the entire production capacity for the first several months. Consequently, it will be distributed exclusively through 1&1 as the ‘1&1 HomeServer Pro’ for at least six months, with direct AVM sales expected in early 2027.

In tandem with hardware, AVM is rolling out FRITZ!OS 8.50. After extensive testing in the FRITZ!Lab—which addressed PPPoE-Passthrough bugs and introduced automated traffic prioritization for gaming and video conferencing—the update has entered a wider rollout phase. As of late October 2026, the update is available for models including the FRITZ!Box 7690, 5630, 5690, and 7530 AX. Key software features include a DNS filter to block advertisements, trackers, and malware; ‘FRITZ! Failsafe’ for automatic mobile internet failover on 4G/5G models; and enhanced smart home capabilities, including Matter standard support via the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro acting as a Matter bridge.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, AVM continues its ‘Old for New’ promotion, offering a 40 Euro cashback voucher for returning qualifying older devices through September 30, 2026.
