AVM launches FritzOS 8.40 beta for cable routers and adds Matter‑bridge to 5690 Pro

AVM has released a new laboratory version of FritzOS 8.40 for its FritzBox 6690 Cable and FritzBox 6670 Cable routers. The beta prepares both models for the upcoming FritzOS 8.50 release and corrects three issues affecting downstream display, interoperability on certain ports, and graphical representation in repeater mode.

In a separate lab rollout, FritzOS 8.50 beta is made available for the FritzBox 5690 Pro. The update turns the router into a full Matter‑bridge, allowing direct integration of Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa devices without the need for a separate FritzSmart Gateway. Additional features include DNS‑filter lists for network‑wide content blocking, automatic bandwidth prioritisation for high‑usage applications, a simplified telephony mode and an SOS function that can call up to four pre‑selected contacts.

Both updates are part of AVM’s ongoing firmware‑beta program aimed at expanding smart‑home capabilities and improving network performance across its product line.
