AVM FRITZ!OS firmware updates and Matter bridge

Overview

Throughout mid-2026, AVM expanded its FRITZ!OS ecosystem and hardware lineup. In May, FRITZ!OS 8.25 was released for cable routers 6690 and 6670, while the FRITZ!Smart Gateway received version 8.20 to add Zigbee automation. June saw the launch of the FRITZ!Box 7630, a Wi-Fi 7 DSL router, and updates to the FritzApp Smart Home app.

Firmware developments continued with FRITZ!OS 8.25 rolling out to various models, including the 7510 and 5530 Fiber, addressing stability, IPv6, and child-control UI. AVM also introduced the “FRITZ! Failsafe” function to manage backup connections during outages. In July, the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro received a laboratory version of FRITZ!OS 8.50, transforming it into a Matter bridge for Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa integration. This version also introduced a migration assistant and SOS call features.

In August, AVM progressed the rollout of FRITZ!OS 8.50 through its ‘FRITZ! Labor’ testing program. The update introduces ‘Smart Check’ in the MyFRITZ! app, providing automatic status analyses for WLAN, mesh connections, telephony, and smart home systems to offer troubleshooting tips. Security is enhanced via a system-wide, customizable DNS filter designed to block phishing, malware, and advertising trackers across all connected devices, including IoT appliances and smart TVs.

Smart home functionality is further expanded with multi-trigger routines, allowing for more complex ‘if-then’ automation. Additionally, the update provides automatic prioritization for real-time communication to stabilize video conferencing during high network loads. The beta software is currently available for seven router models, including the FritzBox 5690, 7690, 7590 AX, 7590, 6690 Cable, 6670 Cable, and 6660 Cable.
