The Dutch public broadcaster Avrotros has announced it will boycott the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, marking its second consecutive year of withdrawal. The broadcaster stated that the competition can no longer be considered neutral while a participating country remains involved in a large-scale military conflict, specifically citing the humanitarian situation in Gaza and restrictions on press freedom.

Avrotros Director-General Taco Zimmerman described the event as having become a ‘platform for division’ rather than a tool for unity. The broadcaster expressed dissatisfaction with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), arguing that recent rule changes—which prevent countries in armed conflict from hosting the contest if they win—do not provide sufficient confidence that the contest’s independent and neutral character has been restored.

The 2027 contest is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria. While Avrotros has withdrawn, the Netherlands may still be represented if another public broadcaster takes responsibility for the country’s entry. The EBU has stated it respects the decision and will continue dialogue with the NPO, the umbrella organization for Dutch public service media.
