AWS rolls out new Graviton5 EC2 instances and details on ECS Managed Instances vs. Fargate

At the AWS Summit Japan 2026, a session compared Amazon ECS Managed Instances with AWS Fargate, highlighting that Managed Instances combine server‑less convenience with the ability to choose instance types such as GPUs for high‑throughput workloads and retain image caches on EC2 hosts. The talk noted that Managed Instances use the EC2 data plane, support custom AMIs and SSH access, and can reduce operational costs while offering flexibility not found in pure Fargate deployments.

In a separate briefing covering updates announced the week of June 29, AWS introduced several new features: the Amazon EC2 C9g and C9gd instances now run on Graviton5 processors delivering up to 25 % higher compute performance and larger caches, with C9gd adding local NVMe storage. CloudFormation added an Express mode for rapid deployment feedback, and Amazon EKS gained a Kubernetes version rollback capability. AWS Certificate Manager now supports the ACME protocol for automated TLS certificates. Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 5 became available on Amazon Bedrock, and Amazon WorkSpaces for AI agents launched to let agents safely control desktop environments. OpenSearch Service added a log‑analysis engine with up to four‑fold price‑performance improvement, while SageMaker AI halved inference scaling time. Service roadmap changes and upcoming developer events were also announced.
