AWS expands EC2 instance portfolio and regions

Overview

In early June 2026 AWS made its Graviton5‑based M9g and M9gd general‑purpose instances generally available, offering up to 25 % higher compute performance, a five‑fold larger L3 cache, DDR5‑8800 memory, PCIe Gen 6 and, for M9gd, up to 11.4 TB of local NVMe SSD. The same week AWS announced the Graviton5 silicon itself – a 3 nm ARM chip with 192 cores, five‑times more cache than Graviton4, and up to 35 % better ML‑inference performance, alongside reduced core‑to‑core latency and higher network and storage bandwidth. On 30 June the C9g and C9gd compute‑optimized instances launched, delivering the same per‑vCPU uplift, 48 MiB of L3 cache, 100 Gbps networking and optional local NVMe storage. At the AWS Summit Japan the company highlighted ECS Managed Instances as a flexible alternative to Fargate and announced related service enhancements (CloudFormation Express, EKS rollback, ACM ACME, Bedrock Claude Sonnet 5, AI‑agent WorkSpaces, OpenSearch log‑analysis, SageMaker inference scaling). Mid‑July saw the GA of Graviton‑powered Redshift rg.large and rg.12xlarge nodes (2.4× faster queries, ~30 % lower price) and the G7 GPU family with up to eight NVIDIA RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell GPUs (4.6× AI inference, 2.1× graphics). The I8ge storage‑optimized instances (Graviton4) entered Europe and Canada, M8a arrived in Hyderabad, and G7e expanded for SageMaker inference. In early August AWS extended Graviton4‑based C8g compute‑optimized and I8g storage‑optimized instances to Europe (Paris), Africa (Cape Town), Israel (Tel Aviv), Canada West (Calgary) and Asia‑Pacific (Jakarta), promising up to 30 % higher performance over Graviton3 and up to 65 % better real‑time storage throughput. On 6 August 2026 AWS announced the availability of R8i and R8i‑flex memory‑optimized instances in the Europe (Milan) region, powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors and delivering up to 15 % better price‑performance with notable speed gains for PostgreSQL, NGINX and AI recommendation workloads.
