Argentina commemorates 50 years of La Noche de los Lápices
Argentina marked the 50th anniversary of 'La Noche de los Lápices' with various commemorative acts, marches, and festivals across the country, particularly in La Plata and Santa Rosa. The event honors the secondary school students who were kidnapped, tortured, and disappeared during the military dictatorship in 1976 while advocating for student transportation rights.
In La Plata, Governor Axel Kicillof, accompanied by Estela de Carlotto of Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and Mayor Julio Alak, led official ceremonies. Kicillof used the occasion to criticize the current national administration under Javier Milei, arguing that its policies serve foreign interests and negatively impact youth, education, and labor. He also highlighted the provincial government's guarantee of the student fare as a tribute to the victims' original demands.
The commemorations included the 3rd Federal and International Youth Congress, which brought together over 500 young people from 20 provinces. Other regional activities included the 'Trazo Pampeano' festival in Santa Rosa and tributes in Almirante Brown. Survivors, including Emilce Moler, Gustavo Calotti, and Pablo Díaz, participated in the events, emphasizing the ongoing importance of memory, truth, and justice.
