Argentina faces rising household debt and delinquency crisis
Argentina is facing a significant surge in household debt and delinquency, with reports indicating that over 60% of the adult population carries some form of debt, totaling approximately 21 million people. Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof has criticized President Javier Milei’s economic policies, arguing that citizens are increasingly using credit to cover basic survival needs such as food, medicine, and rent rather than for long-term investment.
Financial indicators show a sharp rise in delinquency rates over the last two and a half years. Bank delinquency has climbed from 2.5% to 12.8%, while digital wallet delinquency rose from 5.7% to 24.5%. Credit card defaults have jumped from 10.5% to 36.4%, and non-bank financial institutions have seen rates rise from 17.5% to nearly 43%. Approximately 6 million adults are currently unable to meet their financial obligations.
Parallel to the debt crisis, the national administration has faced scrutiny for its management of trust funds. Reports suggest the government has diverted approximately US$3 billion from funds originally intended for infrastructure projects to support the national zero-deficit goal by purchasing treasury instruments. Meanwhile, public dissatisfaction is growing, with a Proyección survey indicating a 64.5% rejection rate of President Milei’s management.
