Axpo and Energie Uri open Switzerland’s largest battery plant
A new 58.4MW battery-storage plant has been connected to the electrical grid in Gurtnellen, located in the Swiss canton of Uri. The project was developed through a joint effort between Axpo and Energie Uri.
Axpo’s portion of the facility provides 50MW of capacity to serve the national grid, while Energie Uri’s 8.4MW share is intended to meet cantonal needs. The site at Plattischachen serves as a significant electricity hub, connected to the Swissgrid national transmission network and situated near the Arniberg hydroelectric plant.
The facility is designed to balance the grid by absorbing excess electricity during periods of high supply and releasing it when demand increases. This function is intended to mitigate fluctuations caused by the expansion of solar power. The project is viewed by local authorities as a step toward establishing Uri as a central energy hub, supporting existing wind, water, and solar production.
