Battery storage facility operations in Uri, Switzerland

Overview

Switzerland has commenced operations at its largest battery storage facility in Gurtnellen, located in the canton of Uri. Developed by energy companies Axpo and Energie Uri, the project consists of two systems with a combined capacity of 58.4 MW. The Axpo system provides 50 MW to serve the national market, while the Energie Uri system provides 8.4 MW to meet specific cantonal needs.

Supplied by Fluence, the facility is connected to the Swissgrid national transmission network near the Arniberg hydroelectric plant. The plant is designed to increase grid flexibility and mitigate fluctuations caused by solar power expansion by storing surplus electricity from renewable sources and releasing it during periods of high demand. Local authorities have described the project as an ‘energy hub of national importance’ that serves as a practical demonstration of the energy transition.
