Axpo and Vitol launch LNG bunkering at Italy's Port of Civitavecchia
Axpo and Vitol have successfully completed the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at the Port of Civitavecchia, Italy. The ship-to-ship operation was performed by the Green Pearl, a 7,500 m3 LNG bunkering vessel owned by Axpo.
Civitavecchia, which serves as the primary seaport for Rome and is Europe’s second-largest cruise port, joins Genoa and Naples as a location offering LNG bunkering services. This expansion is part of a broader effort to strengthen LNG infrastructure in Italy to help the maritime industry meet stringent EU emission regulations.
The partnership aims to reduce the environmental footprint of cruise liners by providing a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels, specifically targeting reductions in sulfur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and greenhouse gas emissions. Axpo is also expanding its fleet, having recently chartered the Alisios LNG, a 12,500 m3 vessel.
