LNG bunkering implementation at Port of Civitavecchia
Overview
The Port of Civitavecchia has initiated liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering services to support maritime decarbonization. The first operation involved a ship-to-ship transfer of 750 cubic meters of LNG from the tanker Green Pearl to the cruise ship Silver Ray.
This service, facilitated by a partnership between Axpo and Vitol, positions Civitavecchia alongside Genoa and Naples as a provider of LNG bunkering in Italy. The initiative aims to help the cruise industry meet EU emission regulations by reducing sulfur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and greenhouse gas emissions. Raffaele Latrofa, president of the Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority, noted that the service demonstrates the port’s ability to offer “modern, sustainable infrastructure” for the evolving shipping sector.
