Ayacucho missing persons searches hindered by budget shortages

Budgetary constraints are hindering humanitarian investigations into missing persons in Ayacucho, Peru. The Dirección General de Búsqueda de Personas Desaparecidas (DGBPD) reported that a lack of resources has prevented its participation in recent efforts to recover remains in Uchuraccay, Huanta.

During recent proceedings by the Public Ministry, the remains of three peasants—Daniel Chocce Ayala, Simón Figueroa Cunto, and Ignacio Figueroa Gavilán—were recovered. These individuals were reportedly executed on December 24, 1983. The remains will undergo forensic analysis to confirm their identities before being returned to their families.

Ayacucho holds a significant portion of Peru's missing persons records, with 10,562 entries accounting for 47.4% of the total reported by RENADE. The DGBPD, which operates under the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, is responsible for implementing these humanitarian searches.
