Humanitarian searches for missing persons in Ayacucho
Overview
Human rights prosecutors and forensic teams in Ayacucho, Peru, have recovered the skeletal remains of three individuals executed by the Sendero Luminoso terrorist organization in December 1983. The victims, identified as Daniel Chocce Ayala, Simón Figueroa Cunto, and Ignacio Figueroa Gavilán, were reportedly killed at a school in the Uchuraccay district after being accused of being ‘yanahumas’ or traitors.
The remains are undergoing forensic analysis to confirm identities before being returned to their families. While the exhumation was led by the Public Ministry and the Specialized Forensic Team, the General Directorate for the Search of Disappeared Persons (DGBPD) reported that it was unable to provide support for the operation due to budget constraints.
Ayacucho remains a critical region for these humanitarian efforts, containing 10,562 entries in Peru’s missing persons records, which accounts for 47.4% of the total reported by RENADE.
