Peru regional infrastructure faces budget gaps and development proposals

Budgetary constraints are threatening infrastructure and development projects in several Peruvian regions. In Ayacucho, the Regional Government faces a budget gap exceeding S/ 118 million, jeopardizing the completion of four major investments at the Universidad Nacional de San Cristóbal de Huamanga (Unsch). While the School of Human Medicine may be delivered in late October, difficulties in acquiring biomedical equipment persist. Regional Council President Cristian Palomino warned that the lack of resources could lead to staff reductions or the suspension of projects, which may need to be rescheduled for next year.

In Arequipa, the Universidad Católica de Santa María (UCSM) is proposing two major initiatives to President Keiko Fujimori to address regional challenges. The first aims to solve medical specialist shortages in new hospitals by establishing agreements to incorporate medical trainees into the public health system. The second proposal involves modernizing urban mobility through an electric mass transit system that would utilize existing railway infrastructure to create an urban train, avoiding the need for entirely new lines.
