Istanbul and Kocaeli floods leave 8 dead and several missing

Severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Istanbul and Kocaeli has resulted in at least eight confirmed deaths and left several people missing. In the Ayazağa neighborhood of Istanbul, search efforts continue for three individuals, including Ahmet Derin and Haşim Ciritoğulları, after the Ayazağa stream overflowed. One victim, Murat Babacanov, was recovered near the Haliç Golden Horn facilities.

In the Gebze district of Kocaeli, a vehicle swept away by floodwaters led to the deaths of 31-year-old lawyer Fatih Demirtaş and Doğan Arslan. A third passenger, Mustafa Deniz Ertaş, managed to survive by clinging to a tree branch.

Authorities are managing the aftermath through various measures. The Urban Transformation Presidency has established an office in Ayazağa to oversee reconstruction and stream rehabilitation. To prevent future disasters, officials are conducting controlled demolitions of buildings obstructing the İSKİ stream rehabilitation project.

Financial aid has been initiated, with 10,000 lira provided to 5,000 affected citizens to meet emergency needs. Additionally, the Confederation of Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen (TESK) is providing 80 million lira to support local businesses. Agricultural damages are estimated at approximately 60 million lira.
