Ayder honey production drops by half due to weather

Honey production in the Ayder Plateau region of Rize has dropped by half this season due to adverse weather conditions. The Ayder Kaplıca ve Aşağı Şimşirli Agricultural Development Cooperative reported that while a 3-ton yield was expected, only approximately 1.5 tons were harvested.

Recep Yaşar, president of the cooperative, stated that the registered geographical indication honey is in high demand and often sells out before the next season. Current prices are set to remain valid until October 1, after which new tariffs will be implemented. Prices for the 'Zirve Balı' brand are 8,000 TL per kilogram, while other brands such as Fırtına Vadisi, Hala Deresi, and Kestane Balı are priced at 5,000 TL per kilogram.

Approximately 100 beekeepers operate in the area. Producers also noted that traditional 'karakovan' honey production has been similarly limited by seasonal weather patterns.
