Turkish honey production declines due to weather

In the Ayder Plateau region of Rize, the Ayder Kaplıca ve Aşağı Şimşirli Agricultural Development Cooperative reported that honey production has dropped by half, with only approximately 1.5 tons harvested against an expected 3-ton yield. Cooperative president Recep Yaşar noted that the registered geographical indication honey remains in high demand. Current prices for ‘Zirve Balı’ are 8,000 TL per kilogram, while brands such as Fırtına Vadisi, Hala Deresi, and Kestane Balı are priced at 5,000 TL per kilogram. Traditional ‘karakovan’ honey production has also been limited by seasonal weather.

In Gümüşhane, beekeepers and local associations report that honey yields have dropped by 40% to 50% due to irregular rainfall and climate conditions. In certain specific areas, production losses have been reported as high as 90% or 100%. Migratory beekeepers noted the impact on the harvest, which typically involves moving hives to Antalya for wintering in October. In addition to honey, producers are focusing on the promotion of pollen, propolis, and royal jelly.
