Ayvalık olive harvest begins amid fraud warnings and festival announcements
The olive harvest season has commenced in the Ayvalık district of Balıkesir, bringing both economic opportunities and concerns regarding product authenticity.
Ali Uçar, Chairman of the Ayvalık Chamber of Commerce, has issued warnings regarding counterfeit and adulterated olive oil products. He noted that products from other regions are being falsely marketed as ‘Ayvalık olive oil’ through e-commerce sites and social media. Uçar emphasized that while the term ‘Ayvalık’ may appear on packaging, it does not guarantee a geographically indicated product unless it features the official hologram label. The Chamber is currently reporting identified fraudulent sales to relevant authorities and has called for stricter inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Simultaneously, Ayvalık Mayor Mesut Ergin announced the start of the harvest and the upcoming 21st Ayvalık International Olive Harvest and Tourism Festival. The festival is scheduled to begin on October 29, with the official opening on October 30, coinciding with Republic Day celebrations. The event aims to promote local production and tourism through tasting stands and cultural activities.
