Ayvalık olive harvest and fraud concerns

Overview

The olive harvest has commenced in the Ayvalık district of Balıkesir, Turkey. While the season presents economic opportunities, local officials have raised concerns regarding product authenticity.

Ali Uçar, Chairman of the Ayvalık Chamber of Commerce, warned that counterfeit and adulterated products are being falsely marketed as ‘Ayvalık olive oil’ via social media and e-commerce platforms. He noted that the presence of the name ‘Ayvalık’ on packaging does not guarantee a geographically indicated product unless it bears the official hologram label. The Chamber is reporting fraudulent sales to authorities and requesting stricter inspections from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

To promote local production and tourism, Mayor Mesut Ergin announced the 21st Ayvalık International Olive Harvest and Tourism Festival, which is scheduled to begin on October 29.
