AJK elections third phase held in Bagh and Haveli districts
The third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections took place in the Bagh and Haveli districts of the Poonch Division. Approximately 460,000 voters were eligible to participate across 803 polling stations. Due to regional unrest and security concerns, polling in seven other constituencies in the Poonch and Sudhnoti districts was postponed to a later date.
Security was heavily reinforced, with an additional 10,300 personnel deployed to maintain order. The election process has been marked by significant tension, including a boycott call from the banned Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has been protesting against the 12 seats reserved for displaced Kashmiris. Recent violence linked to these protests has reportedly resulted in over 50 deaths.
Unofficial results indicate a competitive landscape. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which leads the overall count with 24 seats from previous phases, is contesting several seats. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has alleged electoral fraud, citing polling delays and restrictions on their agents. Additionally, the Election Commission has ordered re-polling at 23 stations in the LA-15 and LA-16 constituencies on August 15 due to unrest.
