Azad Jammu and Kashmir launches operation to reopen routes blocked by banned JAAC

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government announced an ongoing security operation to clear obstacles created by the proscribed Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC) at entry and exit points across the region. Home Secretary Chaudhry Guftar Hussain warned that “blackmailers” would be dealt with an “iron hand” and pledged to keep routes open to restore normalcy for residents and businesses.

He detailed a recent clash in Rawalakot where JAAC militants opened indiscriminate fire, using automatic weapons and improvised explosives. Police and Rangers responded, resulting in the death of a duty‑bound officer and another official wounded. JAAC leader Khwaja Mehran had issued a 48‑hour deadline to close all entry points, a demand the government dismissed. Authorities also reported billions of rupees in losses from disrupted tourism, transport and trade.

Following the operation, the banking system was restored, and all higher‑education institutions, including medical colleges, were reopened. The education department warned that the banned group was attempting to involve women, children and students as human shields. Earlier protests had already caused at least one fatality and several injuries.
