Azawad Liberation Front and Mali conduct prisoner exchange

The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) conducted a prisoner exchange in Anefis on Sunday, August 24. Under the terms of the agreement, the FLA released 22 Malian military members.

In return, the Malian government released between eight and nine fighters from the FLA, an independence movement seeking autonomy for the northern Azawad region. The negotiations involved Malian and foreign intermediaries, with Togolese authorities highlighting the mediation efforts of President Faure Gnassingbé.

This exchange follows a similar release on August 13, where approximately 82 to 86 Malian soldiers were freed. These successive developments occur amid ongoing tensions and clashes between the Malian military and separatist groups in the north.
