Overview

The conflict that erupted in May 2026 with JNIM’s attacks on villages near Bandiagara has deepened and broadened. In early June, the Malian government launched a multi-billion-FCFA bounty programme targeting JNIM leader Iyad Ag Ghaly and other senior insurgents, signalling a shift toward civilian-led intelligence gathering. By mid-June JNIM began a softer rule in captured areas, collecting taxes and providing limited services, while the group lifted a two-year blockade on the Bamako-Mourdiah-Nara road in late June after negotiations. The army announced the lifting of the FLA blockade around the Anefis base on 10 July and reported 30 soldiers killed in a week-long recapture effort on 12 July. Subsequent incidents included the forced evacuation of Kouakourou village (25 July), a reported Russian withdrawal from a convoy ambush that left 60 Malian soldiers dead (27 July), and a series of operations in late July/early August that killed 37 militants in Bandiagara and Kouakourou. By early August, the Malian military's Operation Dougoukoloko continued targeting the JNIM/FLA coalition. On August 9, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) repelled an assault on the 23rd Infantry Regiment camp in San, involving heavy machine guns and drones; the military reported neutralizing over fifty attackers. In mid-August, a series of releases occurred. The Malian army confirmed the release of 82 soldiers held by the JNIM/FLA coalition, some of whom had been captive since 2023. The FLA characterized this as a ‘strictly humanitarian’ measure.
