Kidal retaken by Malian army and Russian partners

Malian armed forces, supported by Russian Africa Corps paramilitaries, have regained control of the strategic northern city of Kidal. The takeover follows a large-scale air and ground offensive launched by the Malian military to neutralize armed groups and restore security in the region.

The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg-led separatist coalition, announced a “controlled and temporary withdrawal” from the city. The FLA stated the move was intended to preserve its human and logistical capabilities following intensified aerial operations by Malian and Russian forces. The group noted the withdrawal took place without direct combat inside the city.

Kidal has been a central flashpoint in Mali’s long-running conflict, having changed hands multiple times. The city was previously seized in April by the FLA and the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an offensive that resulted in the death of Mali’s defense minister. Analysts suggest that while the recapture is a significant symbolic victory for the military government, it may not decisively alter the broader conflict with jihadist and separatist factions.
