Malian military recapture of Kidal

Overview

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), supported by Russian Africa Corps paramilitaries, have regained control of the strategic northern city of Kidal. The takeover was achieved through a large-scale air and ground offensive designated as ‘Operation Dougoukoloko’.

The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg-led separatist coalition, described its departure from the city as a “controlled and temporary withdrawal” and a “strategic and controlled withdrawal” intended to preserve its human and logistical resources following intensified aerial operations.

While the Malian government has announced the progressive restoration of administration and basic social services, the security situation remains complex. Securing vital supply routes, including the roads to Gao, Tessalit, and Aguelhoc, is considered essential for the return of displaced populations and the stabilization of the region.
