Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has announced an expanded vision for the Zengezur Corridor, transitioning the project from a simple transport route into a multi-layered strategic infrastructure hub. In addition to rail and road connections intended to link mainland Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the corridor is planned to host fiber optic cables, high-voltage electricity lines, and potentially future oil and gas pipelines.

Aliyev stated that the implementation of the TRIPP project has officially commenced following a summit in Washington on August 8, 2025. Azerbaijan is currently accelerating its own infrastructure works, with the domestic railway section expected to reach the Armenian border by next year. The corridor aims to facilitate an annual cargo transport volume of at least 15 million tons.

Regarding energy security, Aliyev highlighted that a major transformer center has been constructed in Jabrayil to support high-volume electricity transmission. He noted that the proposed energy corridor could connect Nakhchivan to Turkey and Europe, potentially providing Armenia with an alternative energy source should its aging nuclear power plant face stability issues or closure.
