Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria electricity interconnection project announced
Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar has announced a major green energy interconnector project involving Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria. Describing the initiative as the ‘TANAP of electricity,’ the project aims to transmit electricity from Azerbaijan through Georgia and Türkiye to Bulgaria.
The project, which began preparation during COP29 in Baku in 2024, will be developed in stages. The initial phase focuses on utilizing existing infrastructure, such as the 700-megawatt connection between Türkiye and Georgia, as well as existing links between Azerbaijan and Georgia, and Türkiye and Bulgaria. Future stages intend to increase transmission capacity.
Bayraktar suggested that if this project is integrated with existing agreements involving Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, it could potentially connect the entire Turkic world through a unified electricity system.
