Azerbaijan reports 4,010 citizens missing from Karabakh wars
As of August 31, 2026, the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons of the Republic of Azerbaijan reports that 4,010 Azerbaijani citizens are registered as missing in connection with the First and Second Karabakh wars.
Of these, 4,004 individuals went missing during the First Karabakh War, including 3,222 military personnel and 782 civilians. The civilian count includes 71 children, 288 women, and 319 adolescents. Six individuals are recorded as missing from the Second Karabakh War.
The Commission continues systematic efforts to locate remains, perform exhumations, and facilitate identification. In August 2026 alone, five remains were exhumed, bringing the total to 910. Additionally, 21 identified individuals had their remains returned to their families for burial, raising the total to 267. Currently, 3,682 people are still considered missing. To date, 32 mass burial sites have been discovered.
