Azerbaijan observes Remembrance Day marking 6 years since 2020 war

Azerbaijan is observing Remembrance Day on September 27, marking the sixth anniversary of the start of the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020. The day commemorates the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the conflict to restore the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Nationwide ceremonies and moments of silence at 12:00 have been held in cities including Baku, Ganja, and Neftchala. Citizens, military officials, and families of the fallen have visited cemeteries and memorial complexes to pay their respects. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ombudsman have issued statements emphasizing the humanitarian impact of the war and the ongoing efforts to rebuild liberated territories and ensure the safe return of displaced persons.

Beyond commemoration, the period is also marked by discussions regarding regional normalization. Recent diplomatic developments, including a joint declaration signed in Washington in August 2025, provide a framework for a potential peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Emerging transport and economic links, such as renewed rail freight movements, suggest a shift toward regional integration and reconstruction in the post-war era.
