B. C. Greens propose AI data centre moratorium and oversight

The B. C. Greens have announced a new technology platform proposing a province-wide moratorium on the construction and operation of artificial intelligence data centres. Party leader Emily Lowan stated the pause would remain in effect until a public-interest audit is conducted and a regulatory framework is established. A primary concern cited is the impact of high-energy data centres on British Columbia’s hydro system and electricity supply.

The platform includes several other AI-related proposals:

• A moratorium on AI use in K-12 classrooms until safety and ethical guidelines are developed. • The creation of an independent AI oversight commission in collaboration with the federal government. • Legislation to prohibit surveillance pricing, where retailers use personal data to set individualized prices. • A ban on AI-powered worker surveillance at job sites. • Requirements for social media platforms to allow users to opt out of algorithmically curated feeds.

Additionally, the party intends to develop a labour market strategy to address potential job displacement caused by automation.
