Saudi Arabia announced the creation of a multinational maritime defence alliance comprising 14 nations to safeguard navigation in the Red Sea, the Bab al‑Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden. The coalition, described as purely defensive and compliant with international law, will be headquartered in Riyadh. Representatives from 43 countries and a European Union delegation attended the Riyadh meeting that formalised the pact. Member states include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, the internationally recognised Yemeni government, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia; the United Arab Emirates and Oman did not join. The alliance was formed in response to a maritime blockade imposed by Iran‑backed Houthi rebels on 20 July, which threatens Saudi oil exports. Saudi officials also indicated preparation for a large sea and possibly land offensive against the Houthis to break the blockade.
