Houthi attacks and Saudi-led coalition response

Overview

Hostilities between Houthi forces and the Saudi-led Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition (MMDC) escalated significantly in late 2026. In September, Houthi rebels launched large-scale ballistic missile and drone attacks against southern Saudi cities, including the reported downing of a Saudi F-15SA fighter jet on September 17. Following Saudi airstrikes in Yemen’s Al-Jawf province, Houthi forces seized the port city of Mocha and Mayun Island, threatening international shipping lanes and oil export routes through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

By October, the conflict intensified with strikes on Saudi Aramco facilities and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. An attack on the airport reportedly caused 12 deaths and over 300 injuries, leading to flight suspensions. In Dhahran, a strike caused damage to the Saudi Aramco headquarters and an administrative building fire. In response to Houthi maritime activities, the Arab Coalition Joint Forces Command conducted airstrikes against vessels and land vehicles in Hodeidah province, aiming to “prevent weapon shipments to the Houthis by organized crime groups.”

Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate failed in mid-October when Houthi rebels rejected a Saudi proposal for peace talks in Muscat. On October 17, Jordanian and Saudi foreign ministers held discussions to coordinate regional stability, with Jordan condemning Houthi attacks that have caused casualties among both Saudi and Jordanian citizens.

On October 25, King Khalid International Airport resumed limited operations, with Terminal 1 for domestic and Terminal 2 for international flights. However, Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree warned the facility remains a “military target.” On the same day, the coalition reported intercepting a ballistic missile, two drones, a cruise missile, and ten ballistic missiles directed at various Saudi regions. These military actions occurred just prior to high-stakes diplomatic discussions scheduled to take place in Tehran.
