Baby orangutan born at Jantho Reintroduction Center in Aceh, Indonesia

A female Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) was born at the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center in Aceh Besar District, Aceh Province. The infant was discovered on 29 July 2026, less than a week old, being carried by her mother, Wenda, during routine post‑release monitoring. Wenda, rescued in 2009, was rehabilitated at the SOCP Sibolangit center, transferred to Jantho in 2013 and released into the wild in 2014.

Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said the birth is a “symbol of renewed hope for preserving Indonesia’s irreplaceable forest ecosystems.” BKSDA Aceh head Ujang Wisnu Barata highlighted the collaborative effort of government agencies, conservation partners and local communities, noting that “protecting the Jantho Nature Reserve requires vigilant monitoring, active collaboration with conservation partners, and strong community involvement.” The ministry emphasized continued commitment to combat illegal wildlife trade and ensure the long‑term survival of reintroduced orangutans.
