Orangutan conservation in Indonesia
Overview
Conservation efforts for orangutans in Indonesia have yielded varying results across different species and regions.
In the Jantho Pine Forest Nature Reserve, the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program has successfully relocated nearly 200 individuals since 2011. This initiative has led to a growing wild population that is reproducing naturally, with at least 10 births recorded. A recent birth of a Sumatran orangutan infant to a mother named Wenda was noted as a “symbol of renewed hope for preserving Indonesia’s irreplaceable forest ecosystems.”
In contrast, the Tapanuli orangutan remains critically endangered with an estimated population of approximately 716 individuals. Their habitat in North Sumatra faces fragmentation from mining, agriculture, and roads. Furthermore, extreme weather and landslides in late 2025 reportedly damaged 8,000 hectares of habitat and may have caused the deaths of roughly 58 individuals, or about 7 percent of the species' population.
