Back-to-school season drives complex retail logistics
The back-to-school season is driving significant logistical activity as retailers prepare for a surge in demand. According to the National Retail Federation, 62% of shoppers had completed their school supply shopping by early July to secure better deals.
Economic factors such as inflation, fuel prices, and tariff uncertainty have influenced consumer behavior, with 46% of shoppers waiting for better deals and 23% spreading their budgets over longer periods. This shift in timing, alongside major sales events like Prime Day, has made seasonal planning more cyclical.
To manage these demands, a complex network of manufacturers, warehouses, and transportation providers is required. Large retailers like Walmart, Target, and Costco maintain strict routing and delivery requirements to avoid shipment rejections. Consequently, many seasonal brands are increasingly utilizing third-party logistics (3PL) providers to access the skilled workforce and operational scalability necessary to meet retail requirements.
