Vietnam food poisoning outbreaks linked to Salmonella and E. coli

Authorities in Vietnam have identified the bacterial causes behind two separate major food poisoning incidents in Quảng Trị and Huế.

In Quảng Trị, testing by the Pasteur Institute Nha Trang confirmed that Salmonella spp. was present in nine out of eleven food samples, including beef sausage, fish cake, vegetables, and bread. The outbreak, which occurred in mid-September in Cam Lộ commune, affected 46 people after they consumed bread at a local food business. All patients have since stabilized and been discharged.

In Huế, the Department of Health determined that the poisoning of 222 workers at the Scavi Huế company canteen was caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Bacillus cereus. The bacteria were detected in several dishes, including shredded chicken, beef salad, and various vegetarian noodle dishes provided by Huế Thành Co., Ltd. The affected workers, who experienced symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting, have all completed their treatment and been discharged from medical facilities.
