Baden-Württemberg sees 15% drop in traffic fatalities in first half of 2026

In the first six months of 2026, Baden-Württemberg recorded 161 traffic deaths, a 15 % reduction compared with the same period in 2025. Serious injuries fell by 5.1 % to 2,562, while the total number of road accidents rose slightly by 2.2 % to 154,347.

Interior Minister Manuel Hagel highlighted that excessive speed remained the leading cause of fatal crashes, accounting for 39.7 % of deaths (64 people). The report also noted a 46.4 % increase in accidents involving e‑scooters and similar micro‑mobility devices, with 1,290 incidents, 126 severe injuries and one fatality. Alcohol‑related crashes declined by 1,895 cases, and incidents involving cannabis or other drugs fell by 348.

Overall, the data show progress in reducing fatalities and serious injuries, but rising numbers of micro‑mobility accidents and a slight increase in total crashes underline ongoing road‑safety challenges.
