BaFin study reveals knowledge gaps among German crypto investors

A study by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) reveals significant knowledge gaps among cryptocurrency investors in Germany. While approximately 13 percent of adults—representing more than nine million people—now own assets such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, their understanding of the technology and market remains limited.

In a representative survey of 1,000 individuals, participants answered only 36 percent of knowledge-based questions correctly on average. Common misconceptions involve the role of cryptocurrencies as inflation protection, price stability, and the suitability of stablecoins for wealth accumulation.

Even among self-identified crypto owners, the results show substantial uncertainty. This group answered 57 percent of questions correctly, but still provided incorrect answers for 31 percent of the queries, a higher error rate than the general population.
