German cryptocurrency investor knowledge gaps
Overview
A study conducted by the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) in April 2026 indicates significant knowledge gaps among cryptocurrency investors in Germany. The survey of 1,000 individuals found that participants answered only 36 percent of technical questions correctly on average, with 45 percent of respondents stating they did not know the answer.
While approximately 13 percent of German adults—exceeding nine million people—own assets such as Bitcoin or Ether, their understanding of the technology remains limited. Although crypto owners performed better than the general population by answering 57 percent of questions correctly, they still provided incorrect answers for 31 percent of queries.
Common misconceptions identified in the study include misunderstandings regarding the role of cryptocurrencies in inflation protection, price stability, and the suitability of stablecoins for wealth accumulation. Additionally, only 35 percent of all participants understood that Bitcoin consists of electronic data records.
