India school infrastructure crisis sparks student protests
A series of incidents involving crumbling infrastructure in Indian government schools has sparked student protests and safety concerns. In Bagalkot, Karnataka, a concrete ceiling slab collapsed in a classroom, injuring between six and eight students. Local officials, including Zilla Panchayat CEO Gajanan Bale, have ordered immediate repairs and structural audits. Parents have criticized authorities for failing to maintain dilapidated buildings and for delays in notifying them of the accident.
Beyond Karnataka, students in at least 10 Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar, have launched protests against the neglect of rural government schools. In Samuhi Bhatpurwa village, Uttar Pradesh, young students refused to attend classes until they received assurances that a new, safe school building would be constructed to replace their current dilapidated structure. These movements highlight growing demands for education reforms and improved safety standards within the national school system.
