Indian school infrastructure and safety protests

Overview

Student-led demonstrations, termed ‘Gen Alpha’ protests, have emerged across India to address significant gaps in school infrastructure and safety. Initially, protests focused on discrepancies between official government data and ground realities, specifically regarding the reliability of the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE Plus) data. Activists used social media to document dilapidated classrooms and unsanitary facilities that contradicted official reports of functional amenities.

Localized incidents, such as a sit-in in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, to demand the relocation of a nearby liquor shop, preceded broader safety concerns. The situation escalated following a structural failure in Bagalkot, Karnataka, where a collapsing concrete ceiling slab injured several students. In response, local officials, including Zilla Panchayat CEO Gajanan Bale, ordered immediate repairs and structural audits.

These movements have expanded into a broader campaign against the neglect of rural government schools. In Samuhi Bhatpurwa, Uttar Pradesh, 122 students—some as young as six—refused to attend classes until they received assurances for a new, safe building, noting a previous 2023 incident where a wall collapse injured a student. The protest in Samuhi Bhatpurwa concluded after Block Education Officer Deepak Awasthi promised that a new building would be constructed soon.

This ‘Gen Alpha uprising’ is spreading across at least 10 states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. Students continue to demand reforms regarding teacher shortages and a lack of basic amenities—including clean water, electricity, and sanitation—highlighting ongoing struggles to meet the legal standards mandated by India’s 2009 Right to Education Act.
