Bagerhat police arrest man for vandalizing Catholic church statue

Police in Bagerhat have arrested a man following the vandalism of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Chitalmari. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Md. Fazlul Sheikh, allegedly broke a glass box containing a statue of Mother Mary and threw the religious icon into a nearby pond.

Following the arrest, authorities recovered the statue from the pond. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may have taken the statue under the false impression that the ornament on the statue's forehead was made of gold. Police are seeking a court remand to further investigate whether there were other motives behind the incident. The suspect has a prior record involving a narcotics case.
