Bahia faces extreme UV radiation levels through the weekend

The Institute of Environment and Water Resources (Inema) has issued warnings for very high to extreme ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels across the state of Bahia through Sunday, April 30. In Salvador, the UV index reached 10 on Wednesday and is expected to remain at that level throughout the weekend.

Several cities in the interior of the state, including Feira de Santana, Paulo Afonso, Senhor do Bonfim, Juazeiro, and Remanso, are projected to reach an extreme UV index of 11. This extreme level has already been recorded in Paulo Afonso, Senhor do Bonfim, and Juazeiro since Wednesday.

The high radiation levels are attributed to dry weather and minimal cloud cover, which reduces the natural protection against solar radiation. Additionally, the approaching spring equinox is contributing to a gradual increase in solar incidence. Inema noted that while temperatures are also expected to be high, with some areas reaching 38°C and humidity dropping below 20%, temperature and UV radiation are distinct phenomena.
